Three Steps On How to Get Out Of Your Own Way
Have you felt anxiety as you’re working on your dreams? Who hasn’t really? I’m not talking about anxiety due to looming deadlines. Rather, I’m talking about knowing you have dreams, but not knowing where to start to achieve your goals. Maybe you’re even scared to begin working on your dreams.
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how hard I should’ve worked to find my true passions when I was 18 instead of 30. If you know me, I hate losing/wasting time since I view time to be the most precious thing on earth.
During these last couple of months, I’ve learned that what brings me the most joy is living a life so full of passion that it radiates off of me. The happiest and most fulfilling me is living a life without holding back that inspires others to do the same.
I came across two completely different quotes last year that got me thinking:
“For what it’s worth, it’s never too late to be whoever you want to be. I hope you live a life you’re proud of and if you find that you’re not, I hope you have the strength to start over.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald
“I’m tired of living normally.” – Shawn Mendes
It got you too, huh? The first quote made me realize that I’m living a life I’m not proud of. I wouldn’t want someone to write a biography about me because my life is just not inspiring, at least not to me. What Shawn said years ago before he became successful hit me hard too. I don’t want to live a normal life, not anymore, not when my eyes have been opened to all the possibilities.
I used to live a life full of discipline, servantship and most importantly, passion. So, what happened?
I happened.
I came to realize that I was the one stopping myself from realizing my dreams. I’m stopping myself from discovering who I really am. I’m stopping myself from learning my true potential.
It’s a pretty sucky feeling when you realize it’s you who needs to get out of your own way. Click To TweetI wanted to be a bit more vulnerable and share with you three steps I’m taking to get out of my own way. Shorten your learning curve and learn from me.
So? How can you get out of your own way to achieve and conquer everything you could ever want?
Sit down and write out what you really want.
Write out your life, health, career and spiritual goals. Write down your fears and anything you want to conquer and achieve. Dream big, get crazy and be as detailed as possible. Go all out and don’t hold back. What you meditate on/think about comes true. (Read Think and Grow Rich to learn more about what your mind can really do.)
I haven’t taken the time to do this before so I’ll be taking action on this step. I don’t know why, but the thought of putting everything I’ve been thinking and wanting down on paper is pretty scary. Pretty sure because it’ll make my dreams even more real and shine a light on things I might not know yet.
Focus on others.
Within your goals, find ways on how you can serve others and do what you love at the same time. Do you want to give your time? Money? Resources? Provide opportunities in the future? You’ll learn that when you make it more about others rather than yourself, you’ll get out of your own way. Talk to people and find out their desires in life. Learn about them as much as you can and serve your heart out.
I made the mistake of not considering others when it came to my life. I stopped building relationships when I focused on myself. Many of my friendships still exist, but that’s just it. Friendships existing, but not in a way where it adds to the life of both parties. I’ve been changing this in my life by rebuilding old relationships and cultivating tons of new ones.
Do something for your dreams every single day.
Take small action steps every single day. Read or listen to personal development books for your mental health. Work out for your physical health. Yes, even 10-15 minutes a day is better than nothing. Reach out to someone and tell them about your product, service or latest creation. Meditate and pray/spend some time in the Bible. Put your dreams on a vision board (I’ll post how to do this soon). Yes, include people you want as a part of your circle of influence. Successful leaders achieving their dreams are never out of reach, even if they’re at celeb status. Trust me, crazy things have came true from my vision board.
I hadn’t done any of this consistently so it’s not a surprise that I feel like I’m a mess mentally and physically. Hey, this year is all about consistency for me.
It’s okay if you’re feeling overwhelmed. If you feel like you are trapped in the life you are in currently, that if you could, you’d be traveling or doing what you truly love, you’re not alone. You just need to get out of your own way. Take the first step and write out everything. It may take you hours or days, but don’t limit yourself by holding back.
Do something daily for your future (self) even if it’s a baby step. Before you know it, the compound effect will start taking place.
