“The question of what you want to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life.” —Marie Kondo
In the past, I never gave home interiors much of my time and attention and for good reason. If you’re a college student, you know decorating is low on the list of priorities.
And even after graduating, you still have to get your adult life together before spending money on the fun stuff like home decor. I hadn’t fully realized how much having a space you can call yours, that also represents your personal sense of style, adds to your mood and overall, mental health.
I also didn’t really know how to decorate because 1) I’m indecisive (Hey, I have an excuse. I’m a Libra) and 2) I wanted to be more thoughtful with my purchases and didn’t want to spend money just to complete a space.
My best friend, Sarah, asked me recently, “What are your stress relief things right now?” And that got me to thinking. Sleeping (that’s a no brainer there, lol), watching television (I’ve never made time for it), and planning how to make my space a home were my top answers. Just thinking about how I’d style my home for fall (which is currently happening) makes my heart smile so much. Now, for the first time since I moved out of my mom’s house over a decade ago, I’m intentionally planning and decorating my space as a form of self-care.
And that brings me to today’s article: sharing my bedroom mood board, items I already own, and what I’m thinking about purchasing!
Note, I like to shop at Crate & Barrel, CB2, AllModern, Wayfair, Z Gallerie, Home Goods, Restoration Hardware, and IKEA when it comes to home-related items and furniture.
GLASS CLOCHE
I absolutely love my Diptyque candles, so much so that I didn’t even open my favorite candle (pictured on my mood board above) until I purchased a cloche. A beautiful candle such as this one deserves to be dust-free, am I right?
MARBLE & BRASS LAMPS
You know what’s funny? I’ve never had lamps on my bedside table. And it’s because I’ve never had nightstands! In the past, I didn’t have a ton of room in any of my bedrooms I’ve lived in, so I’ve always used my dresser to keep things you would normally put on a nightstand. I had my eye on a super modern lamp, but alas, it was too short so I settled on this beautiful lamp set.
FAUX OLIVE TREE
Several years ago, I used to have a palm plant in my bedroom, but I was never home to take care of it. Ever since, I’ve been searching for a faux tree for my bedroom. After looking at so many different species, I landed on the olive tree this past month. I love this specific tree and style. And after much research to find a perfect, realistic one, I placed an order for this exact one today (it was out of stock from Labor Day sales)! I can’t wait to get it soon!
BLACK AND BEIGE PILLOWS
To me, black and beige look so classy paired together! And these pillows have given me the inspiration to dress up my bed with black and beige for fall and winter. I don’t think I’ll get these exact pillows, but it’s a starting point to find my home decor style. I think I’ll head to Home Goods to find some pillows since they’re reasonably priced.
TEXTURED VASES
Over the years, I’ve unintentionally ended up with a ton of tall, clear round glass vases in different heights. I wanted to break up the monotony and add these textured vases to my collection. The black one is out of stock currently, so I ordered the white one first.
SNAKE PLANT
I just added this sleek snake plant to help purify the air in my bedroom. And in case you didn’t know, snake plants are great at filtering out formaldehydes, benzene, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene. At night, it gives off oxygen and another plus? Snake plants are hard to kill, so for this terrible plant mom, I think I have a good chance in keeping some greenery alive, ha!
BRASS TISSUE BOX COVER
I’ve always hated cardboard tissue boxes because once you near the end, they’re so easy to knock over. I know, first-class, first-world problems. To add a little pizazz to my bedroom, I added this brass tissue box cover to my cart and it’s on its way to me!
ROUND MARBLE TRAY
I have a lot of fragrance bottles so I thought this marble tray would be perfect to keep them in one place. Marble is my favorite stone and I know it’s going to just elevate my fragrance collection so in my cart it went. It’s so pretty in person too! The marble is not your typical black, white, and grey. It has some brown veining, which I like because it’ll go with my grey, black, white, and cream color scheme I’m planning.
CREAM BEDSHEETS
Speaking of, since I’ve had the softest white bedsheets for the last several years, I knew I had to get a bone-colored shade, perfect for fall since my bed frame is grey and black! I also needed new sheets after switching from a queen-sized bed to a king-sized bed so it was a great excuse to add this to my wishlist!
TEXTURED COTTON THROW
In my opinion, nothing finishes a room better than a throw! A throw is to a bed like a cherry is to an ice cream cone, am I right? Instead of going for another Barefoot Dreams blanket, I decided to go for an extra textured throw. I can’t wait to show you how I style it soon!
My home decor style is ever-evolving so I’m excited to see what the final results are in the near future.
I hope you enjoyed today’s article and found it inspirational, especially if you’re looking to decorate your home with modern touches!
